Home automation cost in India: what sets the price

Ask ten companies what home automation costs in India and you will get ten numbers, most of them from a table that has never seen your home. We do not publish a price list, and this guide is honest about why. The cost of a system is set by a handful of decisions. Once you understand them, you can tell a fair quote from a padded one.

Here is what moves the price.

The room count is the wrong yardstick

"What does a 3BHK cost?" is the most common question we get, and it has no single answer, because two 3BHKs can be very different projects. One wants the lights in the living room and bedrooms to dim into scenes, and nothing else. The other wants every room's light, climate, curtains, cameras and the water tank on one app.

The size of the home sets the amount of cable. What you want the home to do sets everything else. Count the systems you want, not the bedrooms, and the quote starts to make sense.

The five things that set the price

1. How many systems. Lighting alone is the smallest project. Each system you add (climate, shades, security, energy, water) brings its own hardware and its own share of the engineering. This is the biggest lever by far.

2. When you do it. During construction, or a renovation with the walls open, the cabling goes in with the electrical work. After the home is finished, every cable is a chase through a finished wall, and some things become impossible. The same system costs more later and does less.

3. Wired or wireless. Wireless looks less expensive on the invoice because there is no cabling. It costs you later, in a router in a cupboard that has to stay healthy for years, and in devices that stop answering when a brand's cloud changes. We speak both. We build wired, because that is the one still working in ten years.

4. What you can touch. Keypads, screens, curtain motors, light fittings. This is where a project can double without changing what the home does, and it is the part to choose with your designer, not your electrician. We source these parts and stand behind them. The boards behind the wall we make ourselves.

5. Who answers the phone in year three. A system with nobody to service it is a system waiting to fail. Support has a cost. So does its absence.

Where the money goes

Think of the project in four layers.

The cable and the core. A power line and a data cable to every switch position, one spare conduit beside them, a motor cable in every curtain box, power at every sensor position, all before the walls close. Then the controller that runs the logic, sitting inside your home rather than in someone's cloud.

The boards. Relay boards, dimmer boards, actuator boards, I/O boards, DALI controllers. Ours are made in Pune, at a factory that has built electronics since 1989, and hardened for Indian power: surge protection, and components chosen and qualified to survive a supply that is not always kind.

The visible hardware. Roughly a third of a Meshronix system is made in house. The rest, the keypads, the panels, the fittings, is sourced. We say that plainly because it is checkable, and because we know those parts well enough to repair them ourselves.

The engineering. Design, programming, commissioning, and the day someone walks you through your own home. This is the layer that separates a system from a box of devices, and it is the first thing a low quote leaves out.

What about KNX and the imported systems?

KNX is a respected global wired standard, and a KNX home is a well built home. Imported systems cost what they cost for honest reasons: the brand, the import, and a dealer between you and the people who designed it.

Where we differ is that last part. The controllers are ours, made here, and the people who engineered them are the ones who install and service them. You are not paying for a name on a box, and when something fails the fix comes from the bench that built it. That is why we sit clearly below the imported systems on price without being the low bid. Value in this category is a system that is still working, and still supported, long after handover.

The costs people forget

• Retrofitting later. The cable you did not run during construction is the most expensive cable in the house.
• Ten apps. A home built from gadgets has ten logins, ten updates and ten ways to stop working.
• The internet. If the core lives in the cloud, your light switch has a subscription. Ours runs inside the home, so the house keeps working when the broadband does not.
• Service. Ask every quote who comes when it breaks, and how fast. If the answer is a shrug, the price was not the full price.

Is it worth it?

For some homes, no. If you want a couple of smart bulbs and a voice speaker, buy them and enjoy them. A wired system is a piece of the building. It makes sense when you are building or renovating and want it still doing its job in ten years.

Where it pays for itself is scale. In one 35,000 square foot home we run, energy, water, grounds and safety sit on a single dashboard, and the staff needed to run the estate went from twelve to four. A 3BHK will never see numbers like that. It will see a home that is already right when you walk in, and a system you stop thinking about.

It depends on what the 2BHK should do. Lighting scenes in two or three rooms is the smallest wired project. Add climate, curtains and cameras and it is a different scope. We quote after seeing the home, never from the room count.

Yes, with limits, and we will tell you what they are before you spend anything. A finished home leans on targeted cabling, and on wireless where nothing else fits. The cleaner and less expensive time is while the walls are open.
