DALI vs KNX: which protocol for your home?

DALI and KNX are the two open, wired protocols behind most serious automation in the world. People treat them as rivals. They are not. DALI is a lighting protocol. KNX is a building protocol. The best systems use both, each for what it is good at.

Here is how to think about the two, without the sales pitch.

DALI: precise control of light

DALI stands for Digital Addressable Lighting Interface. Every light fitting on a DALI line gets its own address, so the system can talk to each one individually: this downlight to 40 percent, that cove to a warm 2700K, the whole run off. It also reads back, so a fixture can report that its driver has failed.

What DALI does well:

• Simple wiring. A DALI line is polarity-free and daisy-chains from fitting to fitting, which keeps a large lighting layout clean.
• Feedback. The system knows the real state of every light, not just what it last told it to do.

DALI is not meant to run your blinds, your AC or your door locks. That is not its job.

KNX: the whole building on one bus

KNX is a building-wide protocol. It ties lighting, shades, HVAC, keypads and sensors onto one bus, where any device can talk to any other. Press a keypad and it can set the lights, drop the blinds and nudge the AC in one action, because they all share the same language.

What KNX does well:

• Everything on one system. Light, climate, shades and scenes coordinate natively, with no bridge translating between brands.
• Proven and open. KNX is an international standard with thousands of certified products from hundreds of makers. A KNX home is not locked to one vendor.
• Robust. It is wired and decentralised, so there is no single box whose failure takes the house down.

Why a good system uses both

The honest answer to "DALI or KNX" is usually "both." You run your lighting on DALI for its per-fixture precision, then bring that DALI line into a KNX system through a gateway, so the lights coordinate with everything else the building does. DALI gives the light its quality. KNX gives the building its intelligence.

This is the part a single-brand wireless kit cannot match. It has neither DALI's control of the light nor KNX's coordination of the building. It has an app.
